U.S. economic sanctions against Cuba undermine American foreign policy because they allow Cuban officials to portray Cuba as the victim, “the country surrounded, the country harassed,” blogger Claudia Cadelo said.
She said she knows President Barack Obama doesn’t have the power to lift the embargo – only U.S. lawmakers can do that. But if she were to meet or write a letter to Obama, she said:
I’d ask, for example, that sanctions be lifted, that the embargo, the blockade, be lifted because I don’t really believe that it works…and when things don’t work I believe they should be changed.
Socialism hasn’t worked, either, the blogger said, and should also be changed.
Civil society has been “destroyed” in Cuba over the past 50 years and must undergo a rebirth. She said:
…Everything needs to start from the beginning and that’s going to be very difficult because to top things off the political situation remains the same.
